The film's content and presentation cause many to question whether violence in cinema desensitizes viewers and leads them to accept real-world violence. Society should not do the wrong thing for the right reason, even though it frequently does the right thing for the wrong reason. One of the conclusions of the film is, of course, that there are limits to which society should go in maintaining law and order. Alex exercises his freedom to be a vicious thug until the State turns him into a harmless zombie no longer able to choose between good and evil. The film explores the difficulties of reconciling the conflict between individual freedom and social order. Prescribing "good behavior" through the use of drugs and aversion therapy only serves to further dehumanize them. The film argues that the government and society are to blame for the delinquency of its citizens. They are a product of a society that has failed them, and they respond by committing acts of violence.
